Three Goals of Effective Discipleship Training

When it comes to our spiritual lives, the benefits received from relationships with well-trained individuals can be immense.

For over 23 years, I have had the privilege of serving in a variety of ministries. Each of them focused on discipleship of God’s people in fulfilling Ephesians 4:11, “equipping people to do the work of the ministry.”

Equipping is a key part of discipleship and it is essential that we learn how the Bible teaches us to care and train people. That’s really the beginning point for every individual and church who is considering BCC’s counseling training.

We want you to grow in your discipleship and be trained to make a greater spiritual impact on others.

When considering effective training, we want to prioritize three key goals: “personal growth, sound doctrine, and comprehensive equipping.”

Goal #1 – Personal Growth (Hebrews 6:1)

Hebrews calls us to “move beyond the elementary teachings about Christ and be taken forward to maturity.” One of the Psalms tells us to be like tree planted, yielding fruit.

That’s a growth curve initiative for every Christian.

The best part of BCC’s biblical counseling courses is that each course engages the learner in the Scripture through video teaching, discussion threads, and one-another building.

This training helps us grow.  We grow in holiness. We grow in maturity. We grow like Jesus. We grow as a body.

Goal #2 – Sound Doctrine (Titus 2:11-15)

“Pursue sound doctrine” may be a common phrase in churches, but the goal is such an important one.

The Apostle Paul encouraged the elder Titus to personally hold on to and train others in “sound doctrine.” In another epistle, Paul, tells Timothy to “guard the good deposit entrusted to you” (2 Timothy 1:13–14).

BCC counseling training is unique because it wrestles with the great doctrines of the faith and advocates that doctrine must be healthy, biblical, and orthodox for lasting transformation to happen.

A sound doctrine approach to counseling will be a healthy curriculum taught by Professor Grace (Jesus). Professor Grace teaches us not only sound doctrine to embrace but how to live in a godly way.

Our curriculum is balanced, leading the Holy Spirit to bring personal conviction to our students as they engage with the biblical principles taught. Each BCC training session invites you to listen to people who provide sound teaching and see the good news of the Bible as the answer to our discipleship needs.

As you follow the biblical pattern and the example of Christ, you learn how to comfort, care, train, teach, and give wisdom to those who come for discipleship.

Goal #3 – Comprehensive Equipping (2 Timothy 2:2)

The goal of every follower of Christ should be to get equipped to do the work of the ministry.

We need to pursue training that unites biblical content, Christ-like character, and counseling/care competency, and moves you to communicate the gospel practically and biblically (Romans 15:14).

A comprehensive approach moves each leader to apply their personal and spiritual character development towards effective discipleship conversations. That is the heart of our lay counseling training: that students would have a greater spiritual impact for the glory of God (Ephesians 4:11-16).

  1. Amen to all 3 goals! I’ve seen this personal growth and maturing in sound doctrine in our students over the years, and then by adding training in how to help others who are struggling, we see discipleship flourish in and through our students! God has used BCC to equip thousands of students in Biblical counseling skills!
