3 Reasons Why I Can Trust God Today

Times of great uncertainty often reveal where you place your trust.

On a national level, every American just had to wrestle with who we trust to lead our nation. On a personal level, who do you trust to talk through your most difficult struggles? On a family level, can you trust those closest to you to keep their word? On a faith level, can God be trusted to intervene in the requests that you pray for?

So many struggles in life are shaped by who we trust to fix them.

In Psalms, David vividly illustrated the dilemma of who we trust to solve our battles. He said in Psalm 20:7, “Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the LORD our God.” David is reminding us about the futility of trusting our own power to change our circumstances. Instead, only God Himself is worthy of our ultimate trust.

Throughout Psalms, David describes the Lord, why He can be trusted, and even why we should turn to Him in our troubles. Psalm 118:8 says this: “It is better to take refuge in the LORD than to trust in man.”

David gives many reasons why we can trust God, but I want to highlight three that might encourage you in the battles you are facing this week.

Reason #1 – He is the Loyal God

Consider Psalm 9:10, “And those who know your name put their trust in you, for you, O LORD, have not forsaken those who seek you.” God is loyal to those who follow Him. How does it impact your confidence to know that God is on your team?

Maybe you’ve been hurt by a boss who said they were looking out for you but later revealed only to be looking out for themselves. Many have felt the sting of a family member who manipulates them to always get what they want or a best friend who has left them behind as they pursue a new, more popular friend group. We all know the sting of disloyalty.

David wants to remind us that we can trust God because He is not like that. Even in our trials, God is loyal to work all things for our good.

Reason #2 – He is the Loving God

The truth that “God loves me” seems trite to some, but we must never let it be so. The God who created the entire universe loves you. He knows all you have done, including every fault and failure, yet still faithfully loves you.

David said it this way in Psalm 13:5. “But I have trusted in your steadfast love; my heart shall rejoice in your salvation.” In times of great uncertainty, trusting in the love of God redirects my sorrow into a better place.

When my spouse seems to hate me, God loves me. When my children distance themselves, God loves me and even them. When my future circumstances seem dire, a loving God watches over me.

David trusted God because he experienced God’s faithful love, even though he didn’t always feel it in the moment. Remember his frustration in Psalm 13:1: “How long, O LORD? Will you forget me forever? How long will you hide your face from me?” God loves us, even when we can’t always feel it. We can trust in that.

Reason #3 – He is the Lasting God

Psalm 145:1-3 says, “I will extol you, my God and King, and bless your name forever and ever. Every day, I will bless you and praise your name forever and ever. Great is the LORD, and greatly to be praised, and his greatness is unsearchable.”

David had an eternal perspective that God is everlasting and that all our trust will live with Him forever. God came before you, and He will still reign after you. No politician, prince, or any other type of powerful leader can escape this reality.

Psalm 49:18–20 says it well, “For though, while he lives, he counts himself blessed and though you get praise when you do well for yourself. His soul will go to the generation of his fathers, who will never again see light. Man in his pomp yet without understanding is like the beasts that perish.”

Your life on earth will end like all who came before you, so don’t place too great importance on it. Trust God with your future that goes beyond the painful circumstances you may find yourself in. God is the everlasting God, and you are safe in His hands even after death.
