Jesus cares for addicts… and corrupt politicians.
Jesus cares for the sick… and adulterers.
Jesus cares for the homeless… and rich people.
The left side of those three sentences would gain approval from most inside and outside the church. The right side might be harder for us to agree to. Jesus cared for all people in a complicated world, one where it often wasn’t obvious who was right and wrong. Doesn’t that feel like our present moment?
We often talk about “Caring Like Christ” as a counseling center, and it is more than just a slogan for BCC. It is a mindset and passion for our counselors and counselors-in-training.
We believe that ALL Christians are called to care like Christ even when it’s difficult.
There are no easy answers for what it looks like to care for your political foes, offended spouse, or difficult coworker. Caring like Christ can be complicated in practice.
Consider this short passage that describes Jesus’ model of care.
“And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth. [15] (John bore witness about him, and cried out, “This was he of whom I said, ‘He who comes after me ranks before me, because he was before me.’”) [16] For from his fullness we have all received, grace upon grace. [17] For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. [18] No one has ever seen God; the only God, who is at the Father’s side, he has made him known.” – John 1:14-18
Two essentials stand out.
- Grace is unearned kindness. It’s undeserved. Grace is at the core of the Christian message and walk. If we are going to care like Christ, we will be people of grace.
- Truth is hard to define, but precious when we find it. There is no Christian faith without a belief in truth and without believing the truth of what God has revealed about Himself to us.
Two simple applications follow.
- In our care, we share God’s grace, because His grace never runs out.
- In our care, we share God’s truth, because His truth lights even the darkest paths.
Are you committed to caring like Christ? I promise it will transform you and impact those around you for good. Your spouse, kids, friends, and even enemies will be blessed when you choose to care like Christ.
